In a greenhouse experiment saplings of mogno and andiroba were cultivated in a clay-rich soil from Manaus-AM (Brasil). A second set of plants of mogno was additional cultivated in a humus- and nutrient-rich sandy soil. The mean trasnpiration rate of andiroba is significantly higher than the value of mogno especially in clay. But because of the high photosynthetic rates the water use efficiency of andiroba is in the same range as for mogno. This means that the water loss of andiroba and mogno in relation tho their biomass production is similar, the better growth of andiroba in clay causes higher transpiration and therefore a higher water need. |
